What is a Rising Star?

The YMCA Mid America Camping Conference is actively seeking pre-professional staff members to gain experience and networking opportunities while attending the

Mid America Camping Conference through the Rising Star program. Applicants should be selected for their potential as future YMCA Camping Professionals and for their leadership in your local YMCA Camping program. 

How does it work?

• Identify no more than two college age students, who are at least 18 years of age, who have worked for you and clearly have the potential as a future YMCA Camping Professional. Individuals may not be on a camp staff as a fulltime employee, but may be 18 month VISA international staff.
• Discuss the opportunity and Rising Star Expectations with potential applicants.
• Ask identified individuals to download and complete an application form
• Secure a letter of recommendation from their immediate supervisor.
• Submit all of their documents to scrotty@daytonymca.org for review and acceptance.
  

What is my Local YMCA’s Responsibility?

• Provide a letter of recommendation from their immediate supervisor.
• Ensure that all Rising Stars are accompanied to the MACC by a professional member of your staff team who will serve as their mentor and will participate in evening sessions with them to support their development. (mandatory)
• Help Stars acclimate into the conference and share techniques to get the most out of MACC, including arranging for an early check in to accommodate the opening session.
• Allow MACC Veterans to mentor Stars throughout the conference.
• Help to bridge the Stars into back home action planning.

What are the duties of a Rising Star?

Participants will take on an active role in the MACC Conference including:

• Room Hosts:  Select Interest Sessions that they would be willing to assist in introducing the presenter, ensuring that the presenter has all of the equipment they need, and making sure that any of the handouts from the workshop are taken to our Central distribution Table for all other conference participants to utilize.
• Support Services; These services are vital to the operation of our conference.  Activities including keeping areas clean and neat, assisting arriving participants in unloading their personal gear and taking it to their cabins, and assisting in setting up and tearing down AV equipment for presenters.

What is the cost?

In return for their active participation, the rising stars registration fee is reduced to $250.  This includes the conference, lodging and meals.
